Spines help prevent water loss by reducing air flow close to the cactus. In the absence of leaves, enlarged stems carry out photosynthesis. These adaptations allow cactus species to grow in hot and dry places.

All the other 3 plants do not grow in dry and hot regions that is why their leaves are simple.
