DNA to RNA synthesis is known as transcription and the reverse of that process is hence known as reverse transcription. RNA to DNA synthesis is catalysed by an enzyme known as reverse transcriptase.  

The DNA synthesized from the RNA is known as complementary DNA or cDNA. Retroviruses contain RNA as their genetic material and they integrate the converted cDNA into the host genome.
