Most of the myelinated axons are foundin the peripheral nervous system, while axons within the CNS are unmyelinated.Myelin is white, so the old distinction between white and gray matter becomes apparent. In the brain, where there are few myelinated axons, theneurons look gray, hence, gray matter.

The part of the brain and the spinal cord where myelinated nerve fibres are present in abundance is called white matter and the part where the non - myelinated neuron parts are present is called grey matter . white matter as well as grey matter are seen in the brain and the spinal cord
