The state does not favour any particular religion nor does it support any particular religion. Secularism as a term means that the State defines no religion as a state religion. The right to freedom of worship is therefore reserved for everyone. Everyone is entitled to preach openly, promote the faith of his selection. Independent India, though, has seen several cases affecting religious minorities.

Explanation:

  • The politicians who use the religious symbols, beliefs, to instil masses against a specific religious group, now use religion as a social factor. For instance, the demand for a separate Sikh state in Khailstan was meant to split people through religions. The Sikhs were involved in "communal clashes" in 1984.
  • Similarly, from time to time communal disputes between Hindus & Muslims are more politically influenced by political parties pitting each other for electoral gains. One example would be 1992, civic chaos, followed by Bombay disasters, the 2002 Godhra disaster, and recently the 2002 Muzaffarnagar disasters, in which Muslims were assaulted. All these incidents have raised serious misgivings about the secular status of our country.

Some suggestions for promoting Communal Harmony:

  • Promoting the spirit of Indian constitutional preamble: this represents the national unity spirit of our national leaders battling the British empire, which ended in India's independence in 1947.
  • Political and management measures: each ethnic group, caste community, religious group, and language group, as provided for in the Constitution, should have freedom to defend its culture and freedom. Around the same time, all communal groups and local groups are immediately to be banned, therefore reducing the possibility of communalism.  The fostering of national integration includes involving NGOs and social , cultural and educational institutions.
  • Establish a committee for interfaith dialogue to foster the awareness of various religions.  Promoting moral education in educational institutions: this should include fundamental education in all religions.  Exhort people to celebrate festivals of different religion together. Organise shows that stress unity in country diversity.   Plan and celebrate the rich varied cultures of our nation and plan film festivals and screen-films.
  • Invite the media to foster community peace. Media should be empowered to preserve and disperse community harmony and take up the message of "unity in diversity" and teachings by various religions that emphasise to the people of India the unity of humanity and the ideals of humanism.
  • Encourage and engage eminent thinkers and civic activists at the grassroots level in order to foster communal harmony.
  • Promoting visits to religious sites by citizens of different faiths (that us "different religions" to each other’s religious places) — not only will this have economic incentives for people, but it will also make for a clearer understanding of diverse faiths.
  • Teachings of various faiths, including the teachings of Saint Vivekananda and others that encouraged religious unity and reverence for all faiths, should be compiled and circulated among the citizens of this nation. Such lessons must also be included in schools and colleges' curricula.
