The last ivy leaf on the wall did not fall in spite of the fierce storm because it was a painted leaf. Mr. Berhman had painted it to save Johnsy’s life. If he had not painted the ivy leaf, Johnsy would surely have died; while painting he took the risk of exposing himself to extreme cold and pneumonia. However, he took the risk; and as feared, he caught the fatal disease and passed away.
