Answer:

5. In spite of the tragic accident, what did Washington do so as to make the

bridge?

Ans:

After the tragic accident, Washington was totally confined to bed.

Everyone had negative views against Roebling and some suggested that

the project should be scrapped. Washington was never discouraged; he

still had the desire to complete his mission. He tried to explain his plan to

some of his friends, but all of them failed to understand it. Finally, one day,

when he was thinking about his dream project, he saw the sunlight coming

inside through the windows. Suddenly, a gentle breeze blew away the

curtains wide apart and he could see the beautiful scene on the other side

of the window. It was nature’s message to him, to never give up. Inspired

by it, Washington hit upon an idea. All his body parts were paralyzed,

except one finger. He decided to make best use of it. By the movements

of his finger, he developed a code of communication with his wife. He

touched his wife’s arm with that finger, indicating her to call all theengineers before him in the hospital. Then, in the same way, he instructed

all the engineers what to do. The project began again. For thirteen long

years, Washington instructed the engineers by tapping his fingers against

his wife’s arm. Finally, the bridge was completed.
