Revolt of 1857 was fought in the year 1857. It was the first war for Indian Independence. So, it is considered as the first war of Independence. In spite of thousands of people participated the revolt was a failure for the following reasons:

Reasons for Failure:

• This war did not spread in all areas. It was limited only in North India.

• Though many Indian rulers participated in the war, they did not participate with unity.

• They fought for their own kingdoms but not for India.

• Many landlords and zamindars supported British by becoming traitors.

• There was no feeling of nationalism.

• The sources of Indian rulers were limited and not powerful compared to British ones.
