Formula for step deviation method = A + ∑fiui÷ ∑fi × h
Where :
A = assume mean
ui =  \frac{xi-a}{h}
∑ = total frequency
∑fiui = f1u1 + f2u2 ........fnun.
h = length of the class interval.

∴ui =  \frac{xi-a}{h}

The step deviation method formula is ;

                   A + h [∑ui fi / ∑fi ]

Step-by-step explanation:

  • A is the assumed mean
  • h is the class size
  • Ui=di/h
  • fi is the frequency
  • di = xi - A
  • xi is the midpoint of the class interval
