It was built under the Delhi Sultanate by Firuz Shah in the 13th Century. The name of the complex is in Persian means; "The Royal Tank". Siri was the second medieval city in the DelhiSultanate, to which the Hauz Khas supplied water to. The southern region of Delhi houses the Hauz Khas complex which has the water tank a mosque, a mausoleum, and canopies constructed around an urbanized community which traces its existence from Delhi Sultanate period.

It was component of Siri,  which also known as another city of  Alauddin Khalji Dynasty during the period of Delhi Sultanate.  Illtutmish constructed this tank for supplying water to Hauz Khas water which is also used for domestic and irrigational purposes in the city.
