During the 1840s, abolitionism entered mainstream American life.With the publication of anti-slavery newspapers like NorthStar and political activism especially amongst religious womenin the northeast, abolishing slavery became an important topic inpolitics. Laws such as The Compromise of 1850 and theKansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 both dealt with issues ofslavery/anti-slavery, and slavery/anti-slavery sentiments bred thenew political party, the Republican party.
