In the 6th period of the periodic table, 14 elements placed in the III group are known as Lanthanoids.

  • F block elements consist of two series of lanthanoids and actinoids. lanthanoids are 15 elements.
  • They are reactive and the characteristics of the other 14 elements resemble lanthanum.
  • They are silver-coloured.
  • The last electrons are filled in valence shell 5d.
  • +2,+3 and +4 oxidation states are possible on lanthanides but +3 is stable. +3 and +4 containing species behave as a good oxidising agent as they want to acquire a stable +3 oxidation state.
  • They are soft but they have high melting and boiling point.
  • They are ionic and most of them are paramagnetic.
