In the above picture, these two travellers are exploring the Himalayas for the first time. They got lost and had arrived in front of a locked log cabin. The evening was slowly approaching, and they had very little idea about which way to go and where to stay for the night.
Imagine and create a conversation between the two travelers, discussing their route plan and what had to be done in order to find a shelter.

Anna: I am sure that we are lost.

Tom: I think so too, but let's not lose hope.

Anna: Look at the hopelessness- we are right outside a shelter, but this cabin is locked! It will be pitch dark in about 2 hours time.

Tom: The cabin is locked, but at least there is a cabin. If nothing better, we'll break the lock and spend the night inside.

Anna: It doesn't sound right to me.

Tom: We'll leave extra money when we leave. I am sure they will understand.

Anna: I have an idea. I think we should try going south. Let's mark this spot so that if we don't find anything better, we can always come back here.

Tom: But why south? We are already lost. How does the direction make a difference?

Anna: Going north will mean going higher into the mountains; so, lesser chances of finding a shelter. Southwards we could possibly find a village.

Tom: You definitely make sense! But what if we don't find anything there too?

Anna: Then we will come back here. Let us give ourselves an hour's time to go southwards; so that we have an hour in hand if we need to come back here.

Tom: That sounds like a logical plan to me. Let us not waste time and leave right away then.

Anna: Yes, but we need to remember the location of this cabin. How do we trace our way back?

Tom: We could mark the trees on the way down. A small mark should do, so we don't hurt the trees.

Anna: Fine. Let's mark the trees every 40 steps or so. And place the mark about 4 feet from the base of the tree.

Tom: Perfect! Now to hope for the best!
