Answer:

Loss of Electrons ----> Oxidation

Gain of Electrons -------> Reduction

[You can remember above by a nmemonic

LEO GER (Loss of Electrons - Oxidation, Gain of Electrons - Reduction) ]

Remember, oxidising agent goes through reduction and reducing agent goes through oxidation.

Atomic Number of Mg = 12

Mg's Electronic configuration = 2,8,2

=> Mg loses one electron to complete it's octet (8 electrons in last shell).

Since, Mg loses electron, so it goes through oxidation (it is oxidised), this implies, it is a reducing agent.

Cl's Atomic number = 17

Electron configuration= 2,8,7

=> Cl gains one electron to complete it's octet (8 electrons in last shell).

Since, Cl gains electron, it goes through reduction (it gets reduced), this implies it is oxidising agent.

I hope my answer is well understood by you and I have tried my best to explain in as detailed but simple way as possible. Please remember the points mentioned in the starting, you will be able to attend any type of question then.
