In the adjoining figure express the area of the shaded region as the product of two binomials.

Sides of outer square = 3x
Area of outer square = 9x2

There are four unshaded small squares inside the bigger square.

Sides of smaller squares = 2y
Area of smaller square = 4y2

There are total four small square

Area of 4 squares = 4y2 × 4
= 16y2

Therefore area of shaded part

= 9x2 - 16y2
