Given:

  1. PQ = 8 cm
  2. OQ = 6 cm

To find:

⟶ PR = ?

Method:

In ΔPOQ,

By Pythagoras Theorem,

PO² = PQ² + OQ²

⇒ PO² = 8² + 6²

⇒ PO² = 64 + 36

⇒ PO² = 100

⇒ PO = √100

⇒ PO = ±10

Length cannot be negative

∴ PO = 10 cm

PR = PO + OR

⇒ PR = 10 + OQ      [∵ OR = OQ = Radius]

⇒ PR = 10 + 6

PR = 16 cm

Additional Information:

  • Tangent to the radius of the circle is always 90°. This is known as 'Tangent Perpendicularity Theorem'.
