Answer:

Because Victor Hatherley, a young man who's had a pretty bad night. Hatherley was hired by a man named Colonel Lysander Stark to check out what's wrong with a machine he uses to harvest ''fuller's-earth but then suddenly happens when he loses his thumb. He narrowly escapes getting crushed to death when Stark turns the machine on, but he escapes the press with the aid of the woman. Pursued by the murderous Stark, Hatherley is forced to jump from a second-story window, in the process getting his thumb severed by Stark's cleaver.
