Answer:

Atomic nitrogen and atomic oxygen don't exist under "normal" conditions because each forms molecules N2 andO2. N2 is less reactive than O2 in most gaseous reactions because there is a strong triple bond between the atoms, all the valence electrons are in bonding orbitals, and more energy is needed to excite them.

The nitrogen and oxygen present in the air do not react from oxides of nitrogen in the air.

  • In dinitrogen there is a nitrogen-nitrogen triple bond is present.
  • The bond dissociation energy of the triple bond is very high.
  • To make oxides of nitrogen this bond needs to break but very high energy is required to break this bond and this high amount of energy is not present in atmosphere.
  • That's why the nitrogen and oxygen present in the air do not react from oxides of nitrogen in the air.
