In the arrangement shown in figure there are two coils wound on a

nonconducting cylindrical rod. Initially the key is not inserted in the circuit. Later the

key is inserted and then removed shortly after.

(a)What are the two observations that can be noted from the galvanometer reading?

(b) Name the phenomena responsible for above observations.

(a) There are momentary deflection of galvanometer that die out shortly and the deflection are in the opposite directions.

Explanation

As soon as the key (K) is inserted in coil(1), the galvanometer shows deflection is one direction and then turns to zero again. This happens because we know one thing that whenever magnetic flux changes, the EMF is produced. The same happened in this, when (k) is inserted there is production of magnetic fields which get transfered to the coil (2) and the galvanometer shows deflection in one direction.

And it turns to zero again as the magnetic flux doesn't change when the key is kept inserted. For changing the magnetic flux we need to switch on and off the Key (K) again and again.

When key (K) is removed, we will observe that the galvanometer shows deflection in the opposite direction and then again moves to zero. This is because of the change in magnetic flux for some time when the key was been removed.

(b)The phenomena responsible for the observation is know as Electromagnetic Induction. It is a process in which a conductor is put in a particular position and magnetic field keeps varying or magnetic field is stationary and a conductor is moving. This produces a Voltage or EMF (Electromotive Force) across the electrical conductor and because of this EMF, the galvanometer shows deflection.
