Antonio says that he did not know how he got the sadness where it was born and he does not know why he is sad. he is in a pensive mood and says that sadness is making a fool out of him.
Shakespeare does not clarify why Antonio is sad therefore in response to this salerio and solonio try to find out why he is sad.

Antonio is unaware of the cause of his melancholy. Where this sadness originated from, or the cause of this sadness is unknown to him. This sadness exhausts him, and is tiresome for his friends as well. Antonio also mentions that it makes him absent minded to the extent that he has much ado to know himself.
