In the story Old Man at the Bridge by Ernest Hemingway, which takes place during the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s, we see how far down the suffering caused by warfare reaches. Citizens in Spain fled their homes, left their livestock and pets behind and could not carry any personal belongings. The people are tired, thirsty, and moving on foot ..... Artillery and Fascist Armed Forces are waiting for battle. Many have nowhere to go,  and several  have nothing beyond the things they have left behind.

Explanation:

• The protagonist is a soldier who is trying to help get people across a bridge, because the fascists will come soon. The narrator calls "a mysterious occurrence called touch" a battle or a relationship. There will be a war.  But an old man sits and says he can't go any further than that. When the soldier speaks with him, he discovers that the old man has been driven once already.
• The trucks moved up and down and the farmers stumbled along in deep dust on their knees. But without moving, the old man sat there. He was too cumbersome to go any further.
• Seeing this, the soldier as the old man as to where he had come for The old man says to the soldier that he his seventy-six years old and had  twelve kilometers now and he can go no further.” The soldier however said the old man that this was not the good place to stop and if the old man could make it there were trucks up the road where it forks for Tortosa, and many trucks pass by this fork when goin to Barcelona. That is the truck only pass through the divide on the road to Barcelon, and that divided leads to tortosa; however the truck is going to Barcelona
