At the beginning of story Elissa is unhappy with her marriage, however at the end of the story she becomes more unhappy due to her expectations.
- At the start of the story, Elisa is not happy with her marriage. While her husband was not dire, but he did not appreciate her as she wanted.
- This can be noted as one day when Elisa tried to give her business opinion he straight away neglected her interest in doing so. This constant unhappiness leads Elisa to appreciate the attention focused on her by an unknown visitor.
- The attention she receives from the visitor who was a traveling salesperson change her. She defines her looks and feels delighted. This is was the first change she went through.
- However, soon she learns, that the visiting man did not feel the same way about her. The realization made her depressed and angry, which leads to her second shift. The incident made her cry and feel more sad than she had ever felt.
