In the circuit diagram given below five resistors of resistances 10 ohm , 40 ohm,30 ohm,20 ohm and 60 ohm are connected as shown in the figure.[3] a) Calculate the effective resistance of the circuit. b) Calculate the current flowing in the circuit.​

(i) Equivalent resistance of 10 Ω and 40 Ω reistance (connected in parallel) is R1, given as:

1/R1 = 1/10 + 1/40 = 5/40

R1 = 8 Ω

Equivalent resistance of 30 Ω, 20 Ω and 60 Ω resistances (connected in parallel) is R2, given a:

1/R2 = 1/30 + 1/20 + 1/60 = 6/60

R2 = 10 Ω

R1 and R2 are connected in series,

∴ Total resistances in the circuit is R =  R1 + R2 = 8 + 10 = 18 Ω

(ii) Total current flowing in the circuit,  I = V/R = 12/18 = 0.67 A
