see diagram,

here C1 and C3 are joined in series combination.

C2 and C4 are joined in series combination.

we know, charge stored in each capacitor of series combination must be same.

so, charge on capacitor C1 = charge on capacitor C3 ....(1)

given, charge on C1 = 20uC

so, voltage across C1 , V1 = Q1/C1 = 20uC/10uF = 2V

now, charge on capacitor C3 = 20uC [from equation (1)]

so, voltage across C3, V3 =20uC/20uF = 1V.

so, voltage across system of c1 and c3 = V1 + V3

= 2V + 1V = 3V.....(2)

here it is clear that system of c1 and c3 is joined in parallel with system of c2 and c4.

so, voltage across system of c1 and c3 = voltage across system of c2 and c4 = Voltage across x and y

from equation (2),

voltage across x and y = 3V

hence, potential difference between x and y = 3V
