In the circuit shown in figure, the power which is
dissipated as heat in the 6 12 resistor is 6 W. What
is the value of resistance R in the circuit ?

In addition to Sunder’s fine answer, we can effect a solution several different ways. Let’s look at an alternative path to the solution. Since we have a simple series circuit, we can apply the voltage divider relation,

V1=R1R1+R2Vs

Now that we have V1 we may apply the relation,

P1=V21R1

if we assume R1=6 Ohms and R2 = 9 Ohms with Vs = 120 V we have,

V1=6Ω6Ω+9Ω120V=48V

P1=(48V)26Ω=384W
