mean = (6+8+1+9+4) / 5 = (14+10+4 ) /5 = 28/5 = 5.6
so variance = sum of (x-mean)^2/ N for a complete set of data
but if you treat this as a sample ,
variance = sum of (x-mean)^2/ (N-1) for a sample of data
If you treat this as a complete data set then:
Variance = ((6-5.6)^2 + (8-5.6)^2 + (1-5.6)^2 + (9-5.6)^2 + (4-5.6)^2 ) / 5
Variance= 8.24
