In the diagram below the area of the small piston is 2m2 and the large piston is 120 m2.

a. If the small piston is pushed down with a force of 20N, calculate the pressure exerted on the liquid.

b. If the same pressure is transmitted by the liquid to act on the large piston, calculate the force acting on the large piston.

Compare the force acting on the large piston with that being exerted on the smaller piston.

Answer:

a. 10Pa

b. 1200N

Comparison / mechanical advantage is 60

Explanation:

a.   Pressure = Force ÷ Area [F/A]

     Force exerted on the small piston over its area.

    20÷2 = 10 Pa

b. P= F/A. So force = pressure × area.

   Pressure by the liquid on the large piston of area 120m²

   10 × 120 = 1200N

c. Mechanical advantage is the ratio of the input force to the output force. Or the comparison between the 2 forces.

  M.A = output force ÷ input force

  1200÷20 = 60

It has no unit because it is a ratio.
