The chemical process used in converting a primary aromatic amine into the corresponding diazonium salt of the amine is commonly referred to as diazotization.

The reagent we use is NaNO₂ and HCl. The reaction between these two yields HNO₂ (nitrous acid) which is reacting with arylamines at 0-5⁰C to yield diazonium salts.
