In the dry desert country of Arabia live the Arab people called the Bedouin
This name means "desert dwellers"
The Bedouin do not cultivate their ground or grow food. Instead they keep
flocks of sheep and herds of goats, camels and horses. As there is very little
grass in the desert, they have to wander about in search of food and water for
their animals.
The Bedouin are small, thin people with narrow faces, dark eyes and pale skin.
Their greatest possessions are their camels. Camels are pack animals. They
carry the tents and furniture across the desert. They also provide the Bedouin
with milk and meat. Camel's hair is used to make their blankets, clothes and
ropes, and their skins to make bags, bottles and saddles. The Bedouin often
exchange these articles for poles and other things which they cannot make.
Like all other people, the Bedouin need shelter. The deserts are very hot in the
middle of the day, but at night they are swept by icy cold winds. So, the people
want shade in the day time, and warmth and protection from the wind at night.
The Bedouin live in tents. The tents last about five years. The tent covers are
made of strips of cloth, from goat's hair, by weavers who live in villages on
the edge of the desert. Each strip is about three-quarters of a metre wide. The
Bedouin buy the cloth from the weavers and the women stitch the strips
together with thick threads of goat's hair. The length of the strips depends on
the length of the tent they want. A poor family uses strips of five metres long.
A rich man's tent will be ten or even twenty metres long. Bedouin tents neither
have a middle pole nor a special frame. Sometimes, they use six or eight poles
in two rows or nine poles in three rows.
