The rise of nationalism in Europe had initiated with the Spring of Nations in the year 1848. Rule by monarchies &  foreign control of territory was replaced by self-determination & newly established national govts. Some nations, such as Italy & Germany were formed by uniting different  regional states with a shared "national identity". Others like Greece,  Poland, Serbia, Bulgaria & Romania, were formed by revolts against the  the Russian & Ottoman Empires
