Question :-

In the equation 2x + 3y = 11 , find the value of

(a) x if y = 5 , and

(b) y if x = 4

Answer :-

  • (a) x = -2
  • (b) y = 1

Solution :-

(a)

We have,

2x + 3y = 11

and, y = 5

On substituting the value of y in the equation, we get :

2x + 3(5) = 11

=> 2x + (3 × 5) = 11

=> 2x + 15 = 11

=> 2x = 11 - 15

=> 2x = -4

=> x = -4/2

=> x = -2

____________

(b)

We have,

2x + 3y = 11

and, x = 4

On substituting the value of x in the equation, we get :

2(4) + 3y = 11

=> (2 × 4) + 3y = 11

=> 8 + 3y = 11

=> 3y = 11 - 8

=> 3y = 3

=> y = 3/3

=> y = 1
