In the extraction of aluminium carbon anodes are replaced regularly . why​

during electrolysis, aluminium is deposited at the cathode and oxygen is liberated at the anode.

some of this oxygen react with the carbon rod to form carbon dioxide thus slowly burning away the anodes. therefore carbon anodes are replaced regularly
