In the Figure four line segments PQ, QR, RS and ST are making the letter W, PQ||RS and QR||ST. If angle between PQ and QR is 39°, find the values of x and y.

Given : four line segments PQ, QR, RS and ST are making the letter W,

PQ||RS and QR||ST.

To Find :  Value of x and y

Solution:

Properties of angles formed by transversal line  with two parallel lines :

• Corresponding angles are congruent.  

• Alternate angles are congruent.  ( Interiors & Exterior  both )  

• Interior angles are supplementary. ( adds up to 180°)

PQ||RS  and QR transversal

x = 39°    Alternate  Interior angles

QR||ST.  and RS transversal

y = x Alternate  Interior angles

=> y = 39°

values of x and y    are 39° and 39°
