In the given diagram, the arrows indicate the the complete process of pulmonary respiration in humans.
- In diagram 'A', the first arrow represents the flow of air through the nostrils, into the trachea and towards the lungs. The lungs expand on getting filled with air, and push the ribs outward which is indicated by the arrows. As the pulmonary volume increases, the diaphragm is contracted. This is the process of inhalation.
- In diagram'B', the air brought to the lungs by the blood contains CO2, which is exhaled out as shown by the first arrow. This decreases the pulmonary volume and the thorax comes back to normal. This results in the ribs coming back in and the relaxation of the diaphragm as indicated by the arrows.
