In the Figure PQR is an equilateral triangle in the co-ordinates of Q and R as (0,4) and (0,-4). Find the co-ordinates of the vertex P.

Since PQR is an equilateral triangle..
Distance PQ=Distance PR
So, let p(x, y) and Q(0,4) &R(0,-4)
By distance formula
PQ=[(0-x) ^2+(4-y) ^2]^1/2
Now PR=[(0-x) ^2+(-4-y) ^2]^1/2
Since PQ=PR
x^2+16+y^2-8x=x^2+16+y^2+8y
x^2, y^2, 16 will be cancelled out then
-8x=8y
-x=y
Hence the coordinates of P are (-1,1)
