In the figure shown a ring of mass M and a block of mass m are in equilibrium. The string is light and the pulley P does not offer any friction and coefficient of friction between P and M is μ. The frictional force offered by P on M is
(a) Mg directed upwards
(b) μmg directed upwards
(c) g(M - m) directed downwards
(d) μmg directed downwards
(Please give detailed explanation for the question.)

Answer:A

Explanation: well it's given in the question that the ring is in equilibrium hence to cancel Mg of the ring we will need friction of Mg magnitude in the opposite direction, also MAX value of friction is μN but we don't need the maximum value here we just need to cancel Mg ,and tension will cancel the normal hence establishing equilibrium. I could be wrong so it's better to ask an expert lol but I tried my best
