In the figure, two parallel sides of a square is
extended to 4 cm to get a rectangle if area of big
rectangle is 396 cm, find the side of the square.

then , length of rectangle = l = (x+4)cm

breadth of rectangle = b = x cm

area of rectangle = l × b

396 =( x+4)x

396 = x² + 4x

x² + 4x - 396 = 0

x² + 22x - 18x - 396 = 0

x(x+22)-18(x+22) = 0

(x+22)( x-18 ) =0

x + 22 = 0

x= -22

x-18=0

x= 18

as length cannot be negative..

x= 18 cm

Side of the square is 18cm
