The purpose of the first scene is to give backgroundinformation to the audience about the murdered king,Fortinbras, and give some character to Horatio.Shakespeare wants the audience to understand theconcept of revenge and betrayal of those close to you,which is why he mentioned the story of Julius Caesar(1.1.117-118). Horatio says that he and the guardsshould tell young Hamlet about the ghost because hebelieves that the ghost will speak to Hamlet, eventhough it refused to speak to him and the guards (175-177).
