Given:

P atm = 76 cm of Hg

ρ1 = 27.2 g/cc ; h1 = 10 cm

ρ2 = 6.8 g/cc ; h2 = 30cm

To find:

P gas

Solution:

Gauge pressure = ρgh

Equating pressures on the outside and the inside of tube, we get:

P atm = P Hg + P1 +P2 +P gas

or 76XgX13.6 = 13.6 X g X 15 + 6.8 X g X 30 + 27.2 X g X10 + Pgas

on solving,

1033.6g = (204 + 204 + 272)X g +P gas

The value of g in CGS unit = 980cm/s²

P gas = g (1033.6-204-204-272)

=353g cm of Hg

Hence, the pressure of gas = 353 g cm of Hg
