and then use Pythagoras theorem

in triangle ocd

5²=x²+cd²

cd²=25-x²....... 1

in triangle acd

6²=(5-x) ²+cd²

cd²=11+10x-x²....... 2

by eq 1 and 2

11+10x-x²=25-x²

10x=14

x=1.4

cd²=25-(1.4) ²

cd²=23.04

cd=4.8

since bc =2cd

4.8×2

9.6
