Given,

Triangle PQR

MN is parallel to PQ

To find,

the value of X

Solution,

We have two triangles PQR and RMN

We have the basic proportionality theorem for triangles which will be used in this sum,

So,

RM/MP = RN/NQ

-- (x + 1)/(x - 1) = (x + 4)/(x + 1)

Now we cross multiply the numbers

(x + 1)(x + 1) = (x + 4)(x - 1)

x² + x + x + 1 = x² + 4x - x - 4

2x + 1 = 3x - 4

1 + 4 = 3x - 2x

x = 5

Thus, the value of x is 5
