During the medieval times, there was a pyramid of rank which included the kings at the top, then the Knights and nobles under them, rich class of people in the middle and at the very bottom were the serfs and farmers.
The king was the most powerful of the social and economic classes and whatever they said everyone has to bound by them. The lower classes were exploited and often mistreated by the upper classes of people.
