In the house of Ramesh there are 10 incandescent bulbs each of 100W, tow geysers each of 2000W and 15 tubes each of 40W. All these appliances work for 5 hours in a day. Every month he pays heavy amount of electricity bill. His son Suresh studying in Class X asked his father to replace all incandescent bulbs each of 40W to save electricity(Cost of 1unit is Rs 7.00) 1)How much of units of electricity is saved per month (30 days) by replacing incandescent bulbs with CFL? 2)How much money is saved?

Given:

The power rating of incandescent bulb = 100 W

The no of incandescent bulbs = 10

The power rating of geyser = 2000 W

The no of geysers = 2

The power rating of tubes = 40 W

The no of tubes = 15

The power rating of CFLs = 40 W

The time for which all the appliances work daily = 5 hours

To Find:

1) How much units of electricity is saved per month by replacing

incandescent bulbs with CFL?

2) How much money is saved?

Calculation:

(1) As only the incandescent bulbs are replaced with CFLs, we will only

calculate its effect on the electricity bill.

- The power saved per CFL = The power of incandescent bulb - The power

of CFL

⇒ The power saved per CFL = 100 - 40 = 60 W

- So, the power saved by 10 CFLs = 60 × 10 = 600 W

- Electricity saved daily (5 hours) = 600 × 5 = 3000 Wh = 3 kWh

- Electricity saved per month = 3 × 30 = 900 kWh

(2) The money saved = Units saved × cost of 1 unit

⇒ The money saved = 900 × 7 = Rs. 6300

- So, 900 units of electricity is saved per month and the money saved is Rs. 6300.
