Ever wondered why we have four chambered heart? We are warm blooded animals that is we can control our body temperature and not depend on the environment for our temperature regulation. For this we need oxidisation of glucose and this can happen with good supply of oxygen. If oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are mixed we cannot achieve this. Therefore there is need for separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood

Since there are four parts the pumping pressure is divided. First part brings blood into the heart, which is coming from the right side of the body. 2nd part pushes blood to expose it to oxygen via the lungs. 3rd part brings blood already exposed to oxygen of lungs into 3rd part heart. Fourth or last part of heart brings that blood already exposed to oxygen in and pushes it out of the last part of the heart and back into the left side of body. The atrium and ventricles are needed because of the very specific mechanics of these four functions I mentioned above involving the filling and pumping of blood and the order it happens.
