The Armed Forces Officers are Commissioned by the President himself ….yes he signs the Commissioning parchment. On his behalf, the Military Secretary Branch then issues the posting orders .

Theoretically the officer serves with the pleasure of the President and the President will remain pleased till the officer reaches the retirement age and he is sent on pension honourably , retaining the last rank .

However, if and when the officer misbehaves, the President may be pleased to throw him out . The throwing out process is done through a Court Martial and the sentence of dismissal is confirmed by the COAS or the Raksha Mantri depending on the rank . Though in extreme circumstances , there are a few other methods also .
