Keeping peeled onion (as soon as its skin is removed) immersed in water, helps to prevent the stinging caused to eyes and discharge of tears.

The stinging is caused by the chemical Syn-Propanethial S-Oxide, present in onions. It stimulates the lachrymal glands in our eyes, thereby causing stinging and tears. The chemical formula for Syn-Propanethial S-Oxide is (C3H6OS). It is an organosulphur compound.
