Reasons for the spread of democracy in the last 15 years can be attributed to the following:

a. Role of US- Disintegration of USSR, saw the rise of a uni polar World with US emerging as hegemon and being the oldest democracy, it has been since then has been pressing for change , pressurising  countries to establish democracy. We can give example of US imposing sanctions on Myanmar and compelling the regime to transform itself to a democracy.

b. Globalisation and increased connectivity- Last 15 yers have witnessed great inter connectivity among nation states, integration of economies, which has resulted in exchange of ideas, beliefs, making people more aware.

c.Greater awareness among the People- As a corollary of this process of globalisation, we have witnessed increased awareness on part of the people, technological changes like advent of Internet, social networking sites have given more exposure to the people, making them more vigilant and contributing to their empowerment, Due to which people in many parts of the World have desired change, of transferring power to them. One may also give example of Arab uprising, revolutionary movements in Egypt in an attempt to bring about democracy and transfer power to the people.

d. Role of media which has played a very important role in increasing the democratic consciousness of the people, generating more awareness.

e. Role of international organisations like UN and regional organisations like SAARC etc which have  also popularised the ideas of human rights, civil rights for all, further contributing in the spread of democracy.
