Mr. Behrman was an old , unsuccessful artist who lived below Sue and Johnsy. He , after many decades of Failure still hoped to paint a masterpiece. He drank excessively but cared for Sue and Johnsy and considered himself to be a guard dog for the two young artists who lived above.

When he heard of Johnsy's will to die when the last leaf falls , he paints a realistic looking leaf beside the vine on the wall , so that she could live but sacrificed his own life .
