In the poem “My mother at 66”, the poet Kamala Das describes the ageing details through her mother.

She feels her mother has become "old and she may die soon". She is not interested to be separated from her at that time but she has to board the flight to Cochin. She recollects her childhood days with her mother and now she is unable to express her feelings.

She is unable to stop her journey and she wishes to meet her mother soon. No word can express her feelings then. So, she smiles at her mother until she disappears from her sight. As she is unable to express her feelings through her words, the poet has used the ‘smile’ again and again to express her missing feeling of her mother and wishing her to meet again soon.

The word ‘smile’ also shows the hope which can give energy to her mother during her old age.
