He would always buy and bring animals or birds to bring them home. His wife would be against him for filling up their house with different creatures. He would not tell his wife immediately but tell his wife about a new member in the family when her mood was good which shows his love for animals and his receptive nature to love animals.
He tried his best to manage and love Toto even though Toto was unbearably unmanageable. In his zoo were a tortoise, a pair of rabbits, squirrel and goat. They even had a donkey.
He would take his pets along with him while travelling.
His house was like a tiny zoo filled with animals.

However, he seemed to have an immense attraction for mischievous Toto. The grandfather liked his antics and adventures. He had to face lots of inconvenience and loss on account of Toto.
Since Toto did not adjust himself with other animals in the cage, the grandfather had to take him to Saharanpur along with him to collect his pension. As soon as the train reached Saharanpur, Toto scared the ticket-collector by popping his head out of the bag and grinning at him.
Finally, the grandfather had to sell Toto to the tonga driver he had bought it from.
