The protagonist in the story is a man in a fur coat, carrying a suitcase, who befriended the author while he was traveling on a railroad sleeping car. Though they shook hands and engaged in small talks, like old friends, the author could not recall, who exactly he was talking to or where he had met him before.

The strange ‘friend’, recollected about their old times and their gang of friends, even asking the author, if he had been to ‘the old place’. The author tried to evade the same topic, for fear of being discovered that he was just ‘playing along’. Even a random name had an answer from the stranger, making the author feel uneasy.

Stephen Butler Leacock (1869 – 1944) was a Canadian writer known for his humorous writings and as a teacher.
